The cartoon'The Simpsons' never ceases to surprise fans. In the episode shown on Sunday (3) on FOX American, the character Waylon Smithers was revealed to be homosexual.

The series writer, Rob LaZenbik, said in an interview with the "New York Post" that this was a way he found to honor his 21-year-old son who is gay.

"I'm a Midwestern guy, so I don't wear my emotions on my sleeve, so I thought, 'What better way to tell my son I love him than to write about it in the drawing?'" said Rob.

In the chapter, titled "The Burns Cage," Mr. Burns' secretary wants to make it clear that he loves his boss.

Smithers' love, however, is unrequited and Homer then helps him find a boyfriend using a cell phone app.
