Research says gays and lesbians suffer more from mental health

According to a study carried out by the group Stonewall Cymru, from Wales, there is not enough material or professionals to deal with the mental health problems of members of the LGBT community.

The research results suggest that experiences of discrimination in many cases have negative effects on the health and well-being of gays and lesbians who decide to come out of the closet.

Of those interviewed, more than two thirds declared themselves to be out of the closet. Within this segment of openly LGBT people, 39% admitted having suffered some type of homophobic discrimination. Many said their doctors linked their sexual orientations to the root of their problems.

The research also mapped where the majority of discriminatory insults suffered by respondents come from. These include co-workers who refuse to share the same space after coming out of the closet and with healthcare professionals.

Liz Morgan, director of Stonewall Cymru, said "there is still a lot of work to improve the quality of life and inclusion for LGBT people with mental health problems". With the results of the research, she hopes that this reality will change.
