Police must include social names of transvestites and transsexuals in incidents

Occurrence records from police stations in the state of Rio de Janeiro will now have the social name of transvestites and transsexuals. The action is consistent with decree 43.065, signed on July 8, 2011, which guarantees the right to use the social name by transvestites and transsexuals in the direct and indirect administration of the state.

“The inclusion of the social name in the occurrence records ensures that the state knows which crimes are most prevalent against this transvestite and transsexual population. Furthermore, it shows these people that they are citizens like any other”, declared Cláudio Nascimento, coordinator of the Rio Sem Homofobia State Program, to the G1 website.

According to delegate Martha Rocha, head of the Civil Police, before Carnival an ordinance will be issued with the measure. The social name will be included along with the civil registry name. Our objective is to ensure that these people are not victimized a second time at the police stations”, declared the delegate.
