Venezuelan police receive training to better protect and deal with transgender people

Venezuelan police officers received special training last Thursday aimed at improving the defense of the human rights of homosexuals and transsexuals.

According to José Merentes, generation coordinator of the Civil Association, the action is for police officers to be aware of the fact that gays and trans people are “citizens with the same rights as the other population”.

Merentes made it clear that discrimination against the LGBT community must be avoided both on the streets and in police facilities. The first training for police officers took place in San Juan de los Morros, capital of the Venezuelan state of Guárico (150 kilometers southwest of Caracas), based on a resolution from the Venezuelan Ministry of Interior and Justice.
