Jordyn Taylor wrote a very curious article about the benefits of peeing in the shower.
She supported her argument with a statistical argument from a recent survey that indicated that 61% of Americans pee in the shower.
But after all, why should we pee in the shower?
Let's think about this for a moment, mathematically. Every time you pee, you have to flush the toilet. Considering it takes a considerable amount of water to send all the urine to the mysterious aquatic underworld below, it's a huge waste.
A typical flush today uses 6 liters of water, and the average adult pees about 7 times every 24 hours. This means that each day he uses 42 liters of flush water for this purpose. Assuming that people urinate the same way every day, this means that in just one year, a person uses an average of 15.330 liters of flush water.
Considering just the US, there are 319 million people – assuming they all pee the same amount per day, they use 4,9 trillion liters of water in the name of urine every 365 days. For comparison, it's like filling 1.970.000 Olympic swimming pools per year.
Now, if you peed in the shower, you reduce this figure massively. You would pee six times, not seven, a day. This means that in just one year, you would save 2.190 liters of toilet water. Extrapolating this value to the entire population of the United States, we have 699 billion liters of water saved.
Partly thanks to climate change, and partly thanks to the inefficient use of water resources, water supplies around the world are incredibly low. So go ahead, do the planet a favor – urinate in the shower!
