São Paulo City Hall opens Arouche LGBT Citizenship Center

With the presence of the mayor Fernando Haddad and the minister Ideli Salvatti, the City of São Paulo and the Human Rights Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic will inaugurate this Friday (27), at 10 am, the Arouche LGBT Citizenship Center, at Rua do Arouche nº 23, 4th floor. The event will not be open to the public.

+ Trans launch campaign to ask for dignity and respect

The space was created after research showed that, between 2012 and 2013, the city recorded more than 450 cases of human rights violations involving lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transvestites and transsexuals. The target program of this administration, therefore, assumed the commitment to restructure and expand the social protection network for LGBT victims of violence.

It foresees the restructuring of the current service and the creation of four other reference centers. The advisory informs that the Center to Combat Homophobia, created by Decree 52.652 of 2011, operated in the Pátio do Colégio, but shared space with other City Hall services – in addition to having no physical structure, incomplete technique and inadequate human resources.

The restructuring project involves an investment of around R$1 million, 200 thousand from SDH/PR and R$800 thousand from City Hall. In total, 20 collaborators will be involved, including psychologists, lawyers, social workers and human rights agents. In the 400 m2 of Rua do Arouche, there will be a meeting room, auditorium for debates, lectures and even a rapid HIV testing room for the entire population, not just LGBT people.

The Arouche LGBT Citizenship Center will be open from Monday to Friday from 09am to 21pm.
