SP City Hall holds collective wedding with 39 same-sex couples

The city of São Paulo held, last Sunday, the 26th, a collective wedding of 39 same-sex couples, at Club Homs, located on Avenida Paulista. The action was promoted by the city of São Paulo, which opened registrations for same-sex couples who wished to make their union official.

The entire action was organized by the municipality's LGBT Policy Coordination and had the support of prosecutor Eloísa Arruda, current secretary of Human Rights at City Hall.

This is the second action of its kind to take place in São Paulo. The first, which covered the entire state, was sponsored by the state government.

The main differences between civil marriage and a stable union concern inheritance rights, alimony and dependence on health insurance, in addition to the relationship status in documents and the possibility of adopting the spouse's surname.

For the newlyweds, the Municipal Secretariat for Human Rights and Citizenship (SMDHC) provided lawyers to guide the couples and mediated the exemption of the fee from the registry offices, which is around R$500 per union. Club Homs provided the space for the ceremony and the event was free of charge for the city hall.
