President of Uganda loses financial support from the White House and the World Bank

The Ugandan government begins to lose financial support. Senator Patrick Leahy, the oldest member of the House and chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, proposed halting aid granted to Uganda. The World Bank postponed the loan of 90 million dollars, equivalent to 210 million reais, to review and ensure that the money will not strengthen the anti-gay law.

Last Monday (23), the president of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni, signed the law that treats homosexuality as a crime, with possible punishment of life imprisonment. The promulgation was severely criticized and is seen as a major setback.

The UN, through its secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, called on Tuesday (24) for the law to be revised or canceled and for Uganda to protect all people against any type of violence or aggression.

Do you believe that this pressure, especially from the USA, will make the Ugandan president back down? Take part in our poll!
