First gay marriage is legalized in Argentina

Together for 27 years, architect José Luis David Navarro, 54, and retired civil servant Migual Angel Calefato, 65, today held a ceremony to legalize their civil union in Argentina.

"We have been together for 27 years. This is almost a protocol for us, but the approval of the law was a great achievement", commented Navarro on television about the law approved by Congress, which allows marriage between people of the same sex in the country.

The new legislation reforms the Civil Code, changing the words "husband and wife" to the term "contractors", thus making the rights of homosexual couples equal to those of heterosexual couples, including the rights of adoption, inheritance and social benefits.
