Leaders of the countries that make up NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) met this week in Brussels and, as is customary on these occasions, they take their respective partners, who, at the end, pose for the traditional photo of the 'first ladies'. However, a detail in the most recent meeting caught the attention of internet users thanks to the arrival of a 'first husband' to the group.
This year, Gauthier Destenay, married to Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, joined in and posed for the photo. Bettel and Destenay married in 2015, after same-sex unions were legalized in Luxembourg. In 2014, the premier publicly admitted his homosexuality.
In addition to Destenay, the American first lady Melania Trump appears in the image; the new French first lady, Brigitte Macron; Queen Matilde, of Belgium; the first lady of Türkiye, Emine Gulbaran Erdogan; the wife of the Secretary General of NATO, Ingrid Schulerud, as well as the first ladies of Bulgaria and Iceland.
Xavier Bettel is the first openly gay head of government since former Icelandic Prime Minister Johanna Sigurðardóttir and former Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo ended their terms, respectively, in 2013 and 2015.
