Fabiano Contarato managed to be elected as senator in the state of Espírito Santo by Rede with 31,15% of the valid votes, becoming the first openly gay senator in Brazil.

His victory represented a lot, as his main competitor was Senator Magno Malta, well known for his ultra conservative positions, contrary to LGBT+ Rights and who often attacked gays with homophobic speeches.

“It is past time for Espírito Santo to have the leading role in the Federal Senate. You can be sure that I am in the Federal Senate, this will happen. I will give my life to give dignity to this less privileged population, to strengthen the interior municipalities”, the politician told G1.
