“Antibassaria” project bans music that offends women and gays in Bahia

This week, the Legislative Assembly of Bahia approved the “Antibassy” project, which prohibits bands with songs that offend women and gays from being hired with public money.

Authored by PT deputy Luiza Maia, the project received 43 votes in favor against just 9. In addition to being controversial, the PL divided opinions.

“After the fight for freedom of expression, it is the return of censorship. This sets a dangerous precedent, as there will soon be a reason to ban films, books, etc.”, declared Robissão, from the group Black Style, author of the song “Vaza Canhão”.

“She is hunchbacked/clumsy/egg-waisted with a stained face and when she speaks her breath is that of a lion”, says an excerpt from Robissão’s lyrics.

For deputy Luiza Maia, there is no censorship. “I hate censorship and I don’t admit it. Now, to say that you are censoring, when you are asking that public money not finance those who are against our politics... I think you have crossed all limits in the degradation of women. There needed to be a brake. Bahian women no longer accepted it," she said.

The “Antibassy” project still needs to be sanctioned by governor Jaques Wagner (PT-BA).

“I snorted as much cocaine as Whitney Houston,” says Elton John
