Psychologist Pedrosa Responds: I masturbate a lot and lose erections with my boyfriend. What do I do?

I'm going through a difficult situation. I can't get an erection with my boyfriend anymore. I'm addicted to internet masturbation. I spend up to 12 hours straight connected to a chat room. That's been a while. I only stop to drink water, go to the bathroom and eat something. I'm showing up late for appointments and missing work. Please, I need some guidance. Silva (Bauru – SP)

Silva, the fact that you can't get an erection with your boyfriend is probably because you indulge yourself by masturbating on the internet. Your erection may return when you stop masturbating. You are exchanging real sex for virtual sex – sensitizing your body just through masturbation using the internet as a stimulus – building a story of sexual reinforcement through the virtual.

Regarding your compulsion for virtual sex, I suggest that you deal with this behavioral disorder by seeking psychological help. As the reinforcement story seems well established, it's unlikely you'll get out of this alone. There is a functionality in this behavior and in therapy the reason for this compulsion can be highlighted. Take care of yourself, because the longer you wait to treat it, the more difficult it will be to reverse the condition.
