Psychologist Pedrosa Responds: I'm diabetic and I'm losing my erection. What should I do?

Question: Pedrosa, I'm constantly losing my erection in my relationships with my boyfriend, I can't make it to the end. I'm active. I'm 48 years old and six months ago I started becoming diabetic. I'm worried about this, what should I do, because I read somewhere that diabetes can cause this, is it true? Lino (Campinas – SP).

You present with Erectile Dysfunction, which is the persistent inability to maintain the sexual response, through penile erection, satisfactory for sexual intercourse. It is the most common complaint among men in the sexual area. According to research by the Sexuality project of the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of São Paulo – USP, carried out in 2003 with 7.103 individuals in 13 Brazilian states, only 66,5% of Brazilian men report having satisfactory penile erections for sexual intercourse and 1,7% report have complete Erectile Dysfunction.

Most cases of Erectile Dysfunction are of non-organic origin. The main organic causes are: arterial obstructive disease of atherosclerotic or traumatic causes of the pelvic and penile vascular system, which decreases blood flow and reduces penile sensitivity; changes in nerves, illnesses linked to alcoholism and diabetes; changes in hormonal production, decreased testosterone and hypothyroidism, among others.

The main risk factors linked to Erectile Dysfunction are: high blood pressure, coronary insufficiency, multiple sclerosis, operations carried out on the pelvis, use of toxic agents, such as: nicotine, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, among others. Lino, I advise you to immediately see a general practitioner and a urologist to evaluate your case, since you report that you are diabetic. Diabetes, yes, can cause Erectile Dysfunction. Receive my fraternal hug!
