Psychologist Pedrosa: I go out with a guy who says he's bisexual but only dates men, what's up with him?

I'm dating a guy who says he's bisexual. He doesn't want anything serious, just sex. He says he loves his wife and doesn't want to separate. It's funny that he says he likes women, but he only goes out with me and other guys, he doesn't go out with women. We've even had threesomes. What's up with this guy? Altemar (São Vicente – SP).

Bisexuality is a type of sexual behavior. It's not sexual orientation. There are two types of basic sexual orientations: the majority, which is heterosexual, and the minority, which is homosexual.

Bisexuality is a rare sexual behavior as research indicates that less than 2% of the population declares themselves homosexual.

Many variables can determine bisexual sexual behavior. It depends a lot on each individual's life history – what sexual reinforcement contingencies were they subjected to? Each life story is very particular, we cannot generalize.

Bisexuals have a preference for one of the sexes. Generally, a man who declares himself bisexual has a higher frequency of gay sex and a lower frequency of straight sex. The opposite is much rarer.

In the specific case of your question, a plausible hypothesis is that his sexual orientation is homosexual, but he presents bisexual behavior. It appears that the magnitude of gay sexual reinforcement is much greater than that of straight sex.

What led him to have this bisexual sexual behavior, we could only get an idea by investigating his previous life, where we would highlight the functionality of this behavior.
