PSL announces Bolsonaro as pre-candidate for president

Federal deputy Jair Bolsonaro's search for a party that will accept him as a presidential candidate is over. On Friday, 05th, the PSL (Social Liberal Party) announced the parliamentarian's affiliation with the party and, consequently, his pre-candidacy for the presidential election. In a statement, the national president of the PSL, deputy Luciano Bivar (PE), stated that “it is with great pride that the PSL welcomes deputy Jair Bolsonaro and his pre-candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic”. “Furthermore, it is with great honor that the deputy feels sheltered by the party and very comfortable in a party where there is total communion of thoughts”, continues the note in the text, which also considers that Bolsonaro’s ideologies are consistent with the philosophy of the party. In December 2017, rumors that Jair Bolsonaro (until then a member of the PSC) would join the PSL circulated, but were vehemently denied by the party, which even stated that the deputy's ideologies were antagonistic to those of the PSL. At the time going by the name PSL-LIVRES, the acronym released a note on Facebook on December 20, where it rejected the rumors “due to the evident and known differences of thought”. “Jair Bolsonaro’s political project is absolutely incompatible with the ideas of LIVRES and the profound process of political renewal to which the PSL is entirely committed,” said the note publicly released on the social network. Questioned by the agency “Lupa”, from Piauí magazine, the president of the party, Luciano Bivar said that Bolsonaro is now “welcome” to the party and that today the thoughts of the parliamentarian and the PSL are “more convergent than divergent”. After Jair Bolsonaro's pre-candidacy became official, LIVRES abandoned the PSL. CONSERVATIVE Second in polls of voting intentions, behind only former president Lula, Bolsonaro is the main bet of the extreme right. Known for his untimely behavior and hatred of social movements and human rights, the parliamentarian is in favor of military intervention and salutes torturers from the military dictatorship. An evangelical, Bolsonaro belonged, for a long time, to the team allied with the impeached deputy and imprisoned for corruption, Eduardo Cunha (PMDB-RJ). Like Cunha, Jair is against the rights of the LGBT community, the legalization of abortion and, among others, is being sued in the Federal Supreme Court for stating that congresswoman Maria do Rosário (PT-RS) does not “deserve” to be raped because she is “ ugly".
