With the success of Rey and Finn in 'Star Wars The Force Awakens', Abrams is now preparing to add a prominent gay character in the franchise's upcoming films.

According to him, the Star Wars universe has several gays who have not yet revealed themselves as homosexuals.

"When I talk about increasing the diversity of the franchise, I'm not excluding gay characters. We're working to increase diversity, so we'll have gays. Star Wars is fun because it brings up that possibility. It's incredibly small and ridiculous to imagine that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in this world," he said in an interview with Daily Beast.

The script for the new production was rewritten to expand and deepen the story of Rey and Finn's past.

The resumption of the saga, directed by JJ Abrams, is based on the work of George Lucas, and takes place thirty years after the events of 'Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi', 1983 production.

The franchise will return to theaters this year with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which premieres on December 15th.
