Ranking: find out which European countries are where gays are most respected

The European Gay and Lesbian Association released the results of a study that reveals which countries are the most tolerant towards homosexuals in Europe.

The research was carried out based on the legislation and practices that each country has in relation to the rights of gays and lesbians. Considering everything from the possibility of marriage to serious human rights violations. 42 categories were analyzed and countries received scores between -12 (minimum) and 30 (maximum).

“Our annual review goes one step further and looks at the social and political context that influences the lived experiences of LGBT people,” says Evelyne Paradis, executive director of ILGA Europe.

The one who did best was the United Kingdom, which obtained 21 points. Very close are Germany and Spain, with 20 points each. Greece and Italy, the latter an admittedly homophobic country, did very poorly, with only 2 points.

At the end of the list, Moldova and Russia, with -4. Russia is no surprise. Given the constant arrests of militants in the country and the infamous St. Petersburg law, which made any type of gay demonstration in the city a crime. Check out the map with the scores below.
