Rick Martin reveals that “no one” supported him when he decided to come out

Puerto Rican star Rick Martin opened up and spoke in an interview with The Daily Show about when he decided to make his sexuality public, one of the most delicate moments of his career. On air in the series American Crime Story: The Assassination of Gianni Versace, the artist commented, for the first time, on his coming out of the closet. Martin revealed that he was always afraid of coming out as gay as an internationally recognized artist, fearing that it would hinder the continuity of his work. According to what he says, when he decided to make his homosexuality public, “no one” supported him and friends said that would be “the end” of his career. “Absolutely no one supported me. That's why it took me a while... I was surrounded by friends and people who told me: 'Don't do that! It’s going to be the end of your career,’” he said. “I don’t blame these people. I know they love me and want the best for me, but they are victims of homophobia”, continues the singer. “I also grew up in this traditional Puerto Rican culture that told me that homosexual feelings were impure and sinful,” says Rick Martin. Martin revealed last week that he is officially married to Syrian artist Jwan Yosef. Furthermore, the star is the father of two twin sons and is doing a residency in Las Vegas.
