Coming out of the closet, or revealing oneself as a lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite or transsexual woman, is still news (and often a source of astonishment) around the world – especially in Brazil.

In 2014, many personalities decided to lend their visibility to shed light on the topic of sexual and gender diversity. And they contributed to breaking stigmas.
After all, coming out as LGBT is more than just talking about who you are attracted to or which gender you identify with. It is a political act, whose visibility helps to naturalize the issue, insert the LGBT community into society and create positive references.

IAN THORPE (swimmer, gay)
Owner of five Olympic medals, former swimmer Ian Thorpe, 31, revealed that he is gay. In an interview with journalist Michael Parkinson, in Australia, the former athlete stated that he felt incomplete in the closet. "I've wanted to do this for a while. But I didn't feel like I could. Part of me didn't know if Australia wanted a gay champion. I'm telling the world what I am," he said.

After becoming famous and successful as an androgynous model, 22-year-old Andrej Pejic publicly admits that he is a transgender woman. Now, she signs as Andreja. On her Facebook, the model who has been on the cover of Elle and Vogue France magazines surprised fans by saying: "I hope to show that after a transition we can be happy and successful in this new chapter."
