IGLTA headquarters, Madrid wants to become one of the main LGBT destinations in 2014

In 2014, Madrid will host the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association (IGLTA) world convention. The choice of the capital is due to the city's open and integrative personality, which beat Stockholm, Zurich and Cannes, also candidates to host the meeting.

The metropolis' tourist attractions and the support of the city hall were essential for Madrid's victory.

“The meeting will contribute to the consolidation of Madrid among the main destinations in the world for the LGTB segment", declared the person responsible for Economy, Employment and Citizen Participation in Madrid, Miguel Ángel Villanueva.

According to the Secretary General of Tourism and Internal Trade, Joan Mesquida, Spain is a “unique country in the world” for having five more LGBT destinations, Barcelona, Ibiza, Sitges, Grand Canaria and Torremolinos, with great weight in the sector, as they represent 10% of the tourism received in the country.

IGLTA is in its 31st edition and has more than five thousand associated companies and institutions in 160 countries.
