New Jersey Senate does not approve gay marriage

The New Jersey Senate defeated the bill that intended to legalize gay marriage in the state that, three years ago, approved civil unions between homosexuals. The proposal was defeated by 20 votes against 14 in favor.

The vote took place amid heated debate among legislators and also with strong demonstrations, both against and in favor, at the gates of the New Jersey parliament.

New Jersey state governor Jon Corzine told the press he was "disappointed" with the final decision. "I feel disappointed by the outcome of the vote on a measure that would guarantee equality for all," he said.
