Uruguayan Senate will debate gay marriage

Last Sunday (24/05) Senator Margarita Percovich said in an interview with radio Montecarlo that the Frente Amplio party will take the debate on gay marriage to the Senate.

In the parliamentarian's opinion, "homosexual couples should have the same rights to get married (in church) as heterosexual couples." She believes there should be a "cultural battle about it." The senator raises the controversy shortly after the government overthrew measure that prohibits homosexuals in the Uruguayan Armed Forces.

The country was the first in Latin America to legalize civil unions between same-sex couples in 2007. The law came into force at the beginning of 2008 and equated the rights of homosexual couples with those of heterosexuals.
