Irish gay senator gains support to run for president

Irish senator David Norris has won support from Dublin's political councils to run for president. Norris is considered one of the favorites and could become the first openly gay politician to be president of a country.

Upon learning of the city of Dublin's support, Norris told the Irish Times that he was "absolutely delighted with the news". In April this year, the parliamentarian had announced his departure from the presidential race after his help to a former partner who was convicted of raping a 15-year-old boy became public.

However, David Norris is a much-loved politician in Ireland and part of the Dublin community campaigned for him not to give up running. The initiative was successful and Norris returned to the election, which depended on the approval of the Dublin council.

To the Irish newspaper, Norris said that he hopes, if elected, to be able to "repay" all the support he has gained from the population. "I pray to God that, as president, I will be able to help the country and the people get what they deserve," he declared.
