Serbia: Government cancels Gay Pride for fear of homophobic attacks

The Serbian Gay Pride Parade, which was to take place next Saturday (06), in the capital of Belgrade, has been cancelled. With threats from homophobic groups to boycott the event, the government decided to "protect the citizens of Belgrade" and prevent the demonstration.

"The decision, announced this Wednesday (03), was taken first and foremost, to protect the citizens of Belgrade, prevent possible clashes, conflicts and disorders that could also endanger embassies of foreign countries", he explained, in a statement, Iviva Dacic, Prime Minister.

Football games, scheduled for the same day, were also postponed. Still in the statement, Dacic states that the last thing Serbia needs at this moment are clashes.

The last Serbian Gay Pride was in 2010. At the time, homophobic groups reacted against the demonstration and created a huge riot, which resulted in more than 100 injuries. For this reason, last year the event was also cancelled.
