Sexonambulism: what it is, how it happens and why it is so controversial

What is sexual sleepwalking? According to neurologist Shigueo Yonekura, from the Institute of Medicine and Sleep of Campinas and Piracicaba, sexonambulism is a type of sleep disorder that causes a person to have sex or masturbate while sleeping, but not remember anything the next day. This type of sleepwalking is rare and can appear in different intensities. As it happens? Generally, the person with sexwalking discovers the problem through reports from the partner who had sex with them. Another sign is that sexual intercourse during sleep tends to be more aggressive. According to the expert, the disorder has no known origins, but some theories link it to people with a history of night terrors or sleepwalking in childhood and/or adolescence. The problem may also occur simultaneously with other sleep disorders, such as apnea. How does it impact a person's life? The disorder can cause several problems in the patient's social, family and marital context, as sexual acts of this origin involve aggression and, in some cases, can lead to crimes. The disorder is dangerous. The great risk is that sexwalkers have sex with someone they don't want - such as someone other than their partner -, exposing themselves to STDs and even committing crimes, such as forced sex, child rape, etc. “A person can commit rape and not remember,” warns the doctor. What to do? Sexwalking has no cure, but it can be controlled through appropriate treatment, which involves medications that eliminate symptoms within three months.
