Only 2% of Brazilians are homosexual, says survey

Research carried out by Datafolha and published yesterday in a special section with the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo shows that only 2% of Brazilians are openly homosexual.

The survey interviewed 1.880 people, men and women between 18 and 60 in 125 municipalities in 25 states. The report heard psychologists to try to understand this behavior of the gay public.

“Staying in the closet is the survival strategy of most gay people. When they discover they are different, they tend to isolate themselves from the family and often start to play a 'heterosexual' role”, says psychologist Claudio Picazio.

The research helps break a stereotype often associated with gays: that of promiscuity. The survey points out that “in terms of sexual frequency, gays and straights have practically the same profile”.

“Considering margin of error and sampling, the result is a 'technical draw'”, reveals the newspaper.
