Sofia Coppola to direct film about gay poet who lived in San Francisco in the 70s

In the book "Fairyland: A Memoir Of My Father", Alysia Abbott talks about her childhood with her father, Steve, a poet and gay activist. The work, considered sweet and engaging by Sofia Coppola, will be adapted and directed by the filmmaker.

In the book, Alysia talks about the moments and difficulties she faced with her father after her mother's death in a car accident in 1973. Alone with his family, Steve decides to move to the bustling San Francisco, stronghold of the gay community in the decade of 70.

“I think it will be an engaging and moving film about a subject I have never seen before,” said Sofia Coppola.

The book also reveals that, since childhood, Alysia accompanied Steve to parties and poetry soirees and learned to understand her father's relationship with other men, often becoming friends with the poet's lovers. As a teenager, she sees these same friends becoming victims of the so-called "gay plague".

The book takes a turn when Alysia travels to study in France and receives the news that her father was also a victim of AIDS and is very ill. It is then that the daughter realizes that the time has come to repay all the dedication to her father, who took care of her alone in her childhood.
