The city of São Paulo today received two new customer service equipment LGBT population. O LGBT Citizenship Center and Mobile LGBT Citizenship Unit.

The equipment is delivered by Municipal Secretariat for Human Rights and Citizenship (SMDHC), through LGBT Policy Coordination and will be added to the two LGBT Citizenship Centers and Mobile Units that serve the center and the south zone, with the aim of helping the LGBT population in situations of social vulnerability and victims of physical and psychological violence motivated by discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity of gender. The Center offers psychological care, legal advice, social assistance and referral to the public policies of the City of São Paulo.
The new space has 381,50 m² of built area, had an investment of R$497 thousand and was named in honor of the transvestite Laura Vermont, murdered in the region, victim of violence motivated by her gender identity a year ago. She was 18 years old when she was attacked and murdered on Avenida Nordestina.

For Alessandro Melchior, coordinator of LGBT Policies at SMDHC, the location and name of the Center mark the beginning of a new situation for the community of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and especially transvestites and transsexuals in São Paulo. “The Center aims to guarantee the rights of the LGBT population in the region, so that cases like Laura Vermont do not happen again”, he highlights.

The third Mobile Unit had an investment of R$112.800 and will travel across the eastern region to bring the LGBT Citizenship Center closer to the population, with services from Wednesday to Sunday. The vehicle, which provides up to two services at a time, offers rapid HIV/AIDS testing using oral fluid, care for victims of violence, referral to legal and psychological advisory services, guidance on the Transcitizenship Program and educational and cultural activities.

The secretary of SMDHC, Felipe de Paula, highlights the importance of initiatives like this taking place in all parts of the city. “With the Center and the Mobile Unit here in São Miguel, we reversed the logic that citizens need to go to public policies. Effective citizenship requires the opposite, public policies must reach the citizen and guarantee the rights of all”.
