The actor who plays Hikaru Sulu in the movie "Star Trek: Without Borders" revealed that the character is openly gay and married in the new film, an Australian media outlet reported this Thursday (7).

The actor John Cho, who in the new films plays the role of Sulu, told the Australian "Herald Sun" that the crew member of the starship USS Enterprise is married to a man and has a daughter with his partner.

The character was first played by actor George Takei in the 1966 television series "Star Trek", Takei revealed his sexual orientation in 2005.

Cho said that screenwriter Simon Pegg and director Justin Lin made the decision to make Sulu gay in honor of 79-year-old Takei, who is openly gay and married in real life.
The decision to have a gay character in a long-running franchise comes as Hollywood faces increasing pressure to include more diversity in its blockbuster films. There still hasn't been an openly gay superhero or action star in a film franchise.

"I liked the approach, which is not to draw too much attention to this, I hope that we as a species go along this path, of not politicizing personal orientations," said Cho.
