“There are people asking me to create a gay character”, says Mauricio de Sousa, creator of Mônica

In an interview with the yellow pages of the weekly magazine Veja, Mauricio de Sousa makes numerous revelations about his great creation, the comic book Turma da Mônica, which has been circulating on newsstands in Brazil for three decades.

Journalist Duda Teixera compares Mauricio's work with Cartoonist Ziraldo's Menino Maluquinho. He suggests that the crazy guy is more believable than the stories about the buck-toothed girl. Mauricio de Sousa responds to the reporter that Ziraldo is "advancing" more than him. The cartoonist also explains that he cannot risk too much, as there are a lot of people involved in the work.

Following his response, he says that "there are people asking me to create a gay character. This topic is very new. If this trend continues, it will be natural to have a homosexual in the Class. We shouldn't raise a flag, we should hold the flag that it is already passing by. It was with this formula that I built my career."

The interview also deals with Mauricio's new comic book, Turma da Mônica Jovem, about the reaction of some fans in relation to this new product, the future of some characters, whether comic books will continue to exist in paper format, among other topics .

Gay slang

Two weeks ago, the website The Cape published a piece of news about the gay slang reproduced in the lines of the character Denise. In the mid-90s, this friendly little friend of Mônica and Magali didn't have much prominence in the comics and occasionally appeared with blonde, brunette and red hair. In the fifth issue of 'Turma da Mõnica Jovem' the girl uses expressions such as "uó", "bread with egg", "stifling the case".
