Samart Meecharoen, 22, a Thai transsexual, decided to file a lawsuit against the Thai army demanding that the “mentally retarded” qualification on his military certificate be removed. Samart, a business student, claims that the term is discriminatory and harms him when it comes to getting a job. The term is often used by the military to explain the exemption of gays, lesbians, transsexuals and transvestites from military service, as they are not considered fit for such service.
