For the first time, Spain will have a transgender woman representing the country in the Miss Universe contest, after 23-year-old Angela Ponce won the national competition and gained the right to compete in the international stage with representatives from various parts of the world. This will not be the first time that a transgender woman has participated in the contest. In 2012, Canadian Jenna Talackova was among the top 12 in the competition. In Brazil, Amazonian Mayra Dias was chosen to represent the country in the global contest. The 67th edition of the global competition will feature 40 candidates and has no set date yet.
