A New Zealand city painted its airport with a giant rainbow flag

An airport is supporting its city's gay community with a 3000-square-foot rainbow flag along its runway. The six colors were painted with a peat paint that will last between three and four weeks.

The gigantic flag was painted along the runway threshold at Wellington International Airport in New Zealand. This month, the capital will welcome visitors to the Pride Festival and the World ILGA Conference.

ILGA is an international organization that brings together more than 1300 LGBTQ+ organizations from more than 140 countries.

“Wellington is one of the most inclusive cities on the planet and we want to show our pride in hosting the ILGA World Conference,” said Mayor Justin Lester .

“Last year we painted the Rainbow Crossing on Dixon Street – it’s not that big – to show how we embrace everyone. The airport rainbow will be the first many ILGA attendees see and I’m sure it will make them feel welcome.”

The airport posted video of the painting process on Facebook.
