The Perseu Abramo Foundation, in partnership with the Rosa Luxemburgo Institute, is in the final stages of preparing a national survey whose theme is “Sexual diversity and homophobia in Brazil: Intolerance and respect for sexual differences in public and private spaces”.

In an innovative attitude, the Foundation's Public Opinion Center (NOP) is preparing a questionnaire, in partnership with organizations and study centers focused on this segment, which will initially be applied to two thousand people from the general population and 480 people from the GLBT population .

During the 1st GLBTT State Conference in São Paulo, the NOP held a meeting to discuss, plan and collect suggestions and concerns from representatives of entities that work in movements against sexual discrimination and defending the rights of the GLBT population. On that occasion, the team also organized the creation of a virtual group, which has functioned as a network of people engaged in the same topic to exchange ideas and information.

Faced with a Brazilian social context where the statistics of crimes against homosexuals are absurdly high and almost nothing is done about them, the Foundation decided to carry out this research whose objective is to contribute to the reduction of violations of the rights of this segment of society and facilitate the affirmation of sexual identities, that is, the research will provide support for public actions and policies aimed at combating discrimination and prejudice against the GLBT population.

The intention is to complete the research by the end of this month and apply it in May. The results will be released later this year, through a book with data analysis and public seminars in different Brazilian capitals. The Perseu Abramo Foundation has already carried out several public opinion surveys, always with the aim of contributing to social issues, such as youth, women, racial discrimination, the elderly, among others. All results of these surveys can be seen on the Foundation's website: www.fpa.org.br.
