Uruguay approves adoption for gay couples

Uruguayan deputies approved last Thursday (27/08) a bill that allows adoption by gay couples. With this measure, Uruguay continues to be the pioneer country when it comes to LGBT rights, because, in addition to allowing gay civil unions throughout its territory, it also authorizes the change of name for transsexuals from the age of 14.

The measure was approved in a vote where 40 deputies, out of a total of 53 representatives, voted in favor. Now the project returns to the Senate, which had already approved the law, but, as there were changes to the text, it had to return to the Chamber of Deputies.

"What matters is the love and quality of the home where the child will live and not the sexual option of their parents", declared the deputy of the Official Party Pablo Álvarez.
