Domestic violence: 25% of gays have been beaten by their partner, says research

According to the organization Broken Rainbow, one in four gay men who are in a relationship have been beaten by their partner in the United Kingdom.

The number becomes even higher when only transsexuals are taken into account. Around 80% of them have already suffered some type of domestic violence from their partner.

"In the UK, a man dies every three weeks as a result of domestic violence. Behind this statistic is a life that has been ruined. Domestic violence has blighted our society for too long and must stop,” says Helen Grant, UK Minister for Victims.

This is Domestic Violence Awareness Week Against Gays, Bisexuals and Transsexuals in the country. The Broken Rainbow organization believes that there should be greater investment in campaigns, explaining, in simple language, what abuse and domestic violence are about.

"Abuse can take many forms, it can be emotional, financial, sexual and physical. It can be perpetrated by current partners, ex-partners and family members," said a representative of Galop, an entity that fights against crimes suffered by gays.
