Victory! With new Penal Code, Mozambique decriminalizes homosexuality

Another step in favor of the human rights of the LGBT community. Mozambique decriminalized homosexuality this Monday (29) with the entry into force of a new Penal Code.

Promoted since December 2014 by the then president Armando Guebuza, the new Code eliminates the persecution of people based on sexual orientation, which had occurred since 1886.

Previously, the persecution of homosexuals was seen as "security measures" for those who "habitually indulge in the practice of vices against nature". It had been written by the Portuguese colonial authorities. 

Therefore, Mozambique becomes one of the first countries on the African continent to decriminalize homosexuality.

In another 30 countries, homosexuality is legally criminalized. Homophobia is so strong in some countries that recently the president of Gambia, Yahya Jammeh declared at a rally that men who want to marry others can have their throats cut.
