According to legislation, currently, the foreign partner of any Israeli must wait four years to apply for nationality, while in the case of homosexuals it is necessary to wait a period of seven years.

The issue was taken to court by the NGO Avot Gueim and, in response to the appeal, the government's legal advisor, Avichai Mandleblit, announced that from now on the process will be the same in both cases.

Discrimination was applied due to the non-existence of gay marriage in Israel, a circumstance that Mandleblit emphasizes will remain in force. The advisor also stated that these people will no longer be required to cancel their previous nationality when applying for Israeli citizenship.

"It is a great victory that puts an end to degrading discrimination against same-sex couples," said the NGO's board after learning of the government's decision.
