Esse ano, quem aparece na frente entre as cantoras são Rihanna e Katy Perry. Rihanna lidera as indicações ao lado de Drake, concorrendo a 5 prêmios. Katy vem logo em seguida com 4 indicações. As duas disputam o título de Vídeo de Ano.
Assim que a lista foi divulgada, fãs ardorosos de Lady GaGa se revoltaram com a ausência da cantora, que não aparece em nenhuma categoria, e lançaram a hashtag no “VMA´s Are Nothing Without Gaga” (VMA Não é Nada Sem Gaga), que logo foi parar no Trending Topics mundiais do Twitter.
